LSI is a term that means latent semantic indexing. Google pioneered its use, and it is shaking up the game when it comes to search engine rankings and scores from across the board. It’s shuffling up results more than any other algorithm tweak ever has. It’s one of Google’s many word relationship technologies that filter out illegitimate websites from the search results. Real websites with real content that’s not spam will never exclude related words, concepts, and ideas from their content pages. Even if a content page is exclusively focused around ‘cherry wood tables’, other words like furniture, living room, dining room, and family room will most likely be used.
Google sees word relationship technology as a significant hurdle for spam webmasters to get over. Instead of just ranking pages according to the words in the document, it looks for words that are related to the words in the document. Naturally, when someone speaks, they don’t say the same keyword phrase over and over again without reference to other related keyword phrases. Just, as in conversation, we penalize the person by ignoring them or shutting them out or telling them to shut their mouth, Google penalizes the site by telling them to cover the topic legitimately, fully, and naturally. There is a natural, and an unnatural, way to show information and content.
Latent semantic indexing is just one of many buzzwords and phrases that Google engineers have discussed and developed. Before that, external link votes, page age, and anchor text links were important. All these things still matter, but Google is getting better at stopping, spotting, and penalizing people that try to manipulate the system to get higher rankings. Google wants pages with real content to pop up first, not webmasters’ keyword-laden spam pages.
Use natural language, use real content, and work with link partners that have legitimate content. If so, latent semantic indexing will be your be best friend. Webmasters should begin updating their pages to add it.
